Chandler Overview

Chandler belongs to Henderson County on State Highway 31 at its intersection with FM 315 on the north shore of Lake Palestine. Chandler is part of the Tyler Metropolitan area.  It is situated 11 miles west of downtown Tyler with the Neches River flowing east of the city and Kickapoo Creek flowing southward west.

Life in Chandler

Chandler is known as the “City with a Heart” due to the abundant volunteer opportunities for people of all ages. These include: Volunteer Fire Department, Keep Chandler Beautiful, Youth 4H, citywide Festivals, Little League, Chandler Library, city and county boards and school activities. A lot of people move to Chandler for a variety of reasons such as good access to quality healthcare, good job opportunities and a nice place to raise a family, low crime rate and the abundance of recreational activities.  Chandler residents are assured of the fact that there are three big hospitals that are only a few miles away should they require immediate medical care and these are the East Texas Medical Center,

The location of Chandler puts it into a position to take advantage not only of its own business and tourism in order to fuel growth but also from the commerce and tourism of its surrounding areas.  Many Chandler businesses will benefit greatly from the new training facility built by the Army National Guard on 49 acres approximately 7 miles east of Chandler in Smith County.   Around 800 military and civilian personnel will undergo training at the site during assigned training times. These personnel will require food, lodging, supplies and other goods that Chandler can provide.

The East Texas State Fair Association purchased 240 acres to be developed as The Park of East Texas. This park is located less than 8 miles from Chandler. This includes an equestrian park, amphitheater, indoor arena, event center and other entertainment venues.

Chandler TX Community Profile


The first inhabitants of the area were the Delaware, Cherokee and Kickapoo Indians. They were led by Chief Bowles and were defeated in 1849 at Battle Creek. The battleground is located just north of the city limits.  The first white settlers was Alphonso H. Chandler and his wife Mary together with their seven children.  They settled in 1859 along with his brother, Haskell and his family. They lived about one mile north of the current downtown Chandler. Alphonso named the place Stillwater in 1872 and constructed a general store in the farm home.

Restaurants & Nightlife

Wade’s Place – A great place to dine and there is a nice covered patio to enjoy.  Do try the 5lb. platter of boiled crawfish with corn on the cob and red potatoes. The food is perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. The boiled jumbo shrimp is absolutely amazing. The fried catfish is a must try and the fries are crispy and delicious.  Long lines especially during weekends.

San Pedro’s – The place offers delicious Tex-Mex cuisine.  The chili relleno and the shrimp enchiladas are super great. Both are perfect with chips and salsa. Service is great and the portions are generous.

Nettie’s Southern Kitchen – Food and service are great and is a nice place to have a family get-together.  Do try their burgers and salads.  The vegetable plate is also good and the fried squash absolutely delicious. Do also try the chicken fried steak. It is a nice little diner that offers old-fashioned country style cooking.

Fun Things to Do in Chandler, TX

Winchester Park – The Park is located on the southern end of the city and features 3 baseball fields, a playground, two pavilions, two concession areas, a lake and a nice walking trail.

Lake Palestine – This is a 25,000 acre reservoir that offers boating, camping and other fun recreational activities.

Chandler hosts a number of fun annual events such as the Annual Pow Wow, Kids Fish Day, Great American Clean-Up Day, Easter Egg Hunt, Holiday in the Park, July 4th related activities and many more.
